It's Fanny Hensel Mendelssohn's birthday
I maintain that she was a better composer than her brother, who is, of course, much more well-known than her. Boo to misogyny! Listen to this! It's stunning!
It sucks to write a sentence like "she was so lucky to have married a cool dude who encouraged her to have a composing career despite her father being against her pursuing it professionally," but, yeah. Look up Maria Anna Mozart if you feel like being depressed by a contrasting story of an equally musically talented sister of a famous composer. And who knows how many women not associated with famous male composers could have ended up being incredible composers had they just been allowed to? Probably a lot!
Anyway. Back to Fanny. I'm glad she wrote so much music and that a decent chunk of it survived. Because I love listening to it. And I'm glad there's more of an effort being made nowadays to get her work out there so people can experience it. It's really good! Listen to the above string quartet and then go listen to a bunch more of her stuff! Do it right now!
